Cuban Lázaro Martínez barely needed two attempts to take first place in the triple jump at the Indoor Athletics Meeting in Val-de Reuil, France.
The Guantanamo-born athlete jumped to 16.84 meters with the initial jump, which would have been enough for him to dominate the competition. However, he took advantage of the second round to reach 17.03 meters, a jump with which he closed his incursion in the event with a silver medal in the World Athletics Indoor Tour 2025.
In addition to the triumph, the mark guaranteed him second place in the universal ranking corresponding to the current indoor campaign, behind Jamaican Jordan Scott, who registered a jump of 17.11 meters when the current year had just begun.
Behind the Cuban were now the host Thomas Gogois (16.69), bronze medalist at the 2024 European Championships, and four-time Turkish champion Can Ozupek (16.37).
Martinez, who placed eighth at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games and was the world runner-up in Budapest 2023, is among the main figures of the Island for the next world indoor event, which will be held in the Chinese city of Nanjing between March 21 and 23.
The former standout Yoelbi Quesada’s student, who set an indoor mark of 17.64 meters in March 2022, is set to compete again on February 8 at the Metz Athletic Meeting in France.
Two days before that, high jumper Luis Enrique Zayas, who will be one of the stars of the Meeting in Udine, Italy, is scheduled to make his debut in the winter campaign.
