Silinda Morales is third in Meeting Atlético de Montreuil

Cuban discus runner Silinda Morales finished third in the international athletics meeting in Montreuil, France, in the silver category of the World Athletics Continental Tour.

Morales, winner of the title in the V ALBA Games in April in Venezuela, obtained a mark of 61.39 meters, close to the 61.73 with which she won the gold medal in the Venezuelan competition.   At only 22 years of age, the Cuban disco ball has a personal record of 63.17 meters.

The experienced French athlete Melina Robert-Michon (65.49 m) took first place, followed by Brazilian Izabela Da Silva (62.61 m).

Also in Montreuil, Rose Mary Almanza finished sixth in 800 meters with a poor time of 2.03.07, in a race won by 21-year-old South African Prudence Sekgodiso 2.00.72.

Some 30 Cuban athletes are preparing abroad for the Centrocaibes in San Salvador this month.

The next to compete will be high jumper Luis Zayas, Roxana Gómez (400m) and triple jump world champion Lázaro Martínez, at the Golden Gala, third stop of the Diamond League, scheduled for Friday, June 2, in Florence, Italy.

Two other Cubans who compete independently of the Cuban Athletics Federation, triple jumper Andy Diaz and sprinter Reynier Mena, will also be in Florence.
