According to media reports, the humanitarian group Doctors Without Borders has rescued 109 migrants who were traveling on a boat that “escaped from Libya.”
After the suspension of an administrative block by Italy, the Geo Barents ship of Doctors Without Borders picked up more than one hundred people, most women and children, who were trying to reach Europe.
The Geo Barents ship carried out a rescue to save the migrants who were drifting in a fragile boat in the central Mediterranean.
According to the organization, most rescued people are women and children, including numerous unaccompanied minors. The operation was possible after the lifting of the administrative block imposed by Italy that had restricted the rescue activities in the region.
The migrants, who started from the coast of Africa in an overloaded wooden boat, tried to reach southern Europe in search of refuge and better living conditions.
The situation in the Central Mediterranean is still critical for migrants and refugees trying to cross to Europe.
The International Organization for Migration (IIM) reports that more than one thousand 100 people have lost their lives in this area so far from 2024. Since 2014, the total number of victims amounts to almost 24 thousand, highlighting the dangerous journey that implies cross these waters.
