Honduras cancels summit of heads of state of CELAC slated for Thursday

The Honduran government has announced the suspension of the Summit of Heads of State and Government of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC) scheduled for Thursday, January 30th and in which they had planned to discuss mass deportations by the United States.

Through a statement, the Honduran authorities reported that in response to a request from Colombian President Gustavo Petro, the Pro Tempore Presidency of CELAC in charge of Honduras, called for an extraordinary meeting in a hybrid, in-person and virtual format.

Last Sunday, January 26, the Colombian president communicated with the Honduran president, Xiomara Castro, regarding the diplomatic impasse between Colombia and the US due to the immigration orders and actions of the US administration.

Later, the Government of Colombia announced that same day that the diplomatic crisis with Washington had been overcome.

After the Colombian Government announced the end of the impasse with the United States, Honduras, in exercise of the Pro Tempore Presidency of CELAC, cancelled the meeting of the integrationist organization called for next January 30, 2025.

Finally, the Pro Tempore Presidency of CELAC reiterated its willingness to attend to any request from the Member Countries for the follow-up of the regional integration agenda.
