For Cuba, the violent and indiscriminate deportation of migrants in the United States, arbitrary detentions and other human rights violations are unacceptable, said President Miguel Diaz-Canel on Monday.
During his virtual speech at the XII extraordinary summit of the Bolivarian Alliance for the Peoples of Our America-People’s Trade Treaty (ALBA-TCP), the president denounced that these measures are also used as weapons of blackmail and political pressure against the peoples of “Our America.”
“The establishment of a detention center at the American naval base in Guantanamo, where they intend to imprison tens of thousands of people, constitutes a barbaric act,” he condemned.
The head of state said that building a migration perspective of peace, understanding and collaboration without politicization is an issue that requires a collective and joint effort.
He recalled that most of the migrants who are in the United States arrived there attracted by its economic development and to satisfy basic needs that the economies of their nations are not able to provide.
“In the particular case of Cuba, the policy of the American government of offering privileged treatment to Cuban immigrants regardless of the route by which they arrive in that country is widely known, to which is added the impact of the economic blockade and the policy of maximum pressure,” he said.
Díaz-Canel specified that migrants and migratory flows are not a problem but a phenomenon of our times, an expression of the challenges of the international system and the prevailing unjust economic order.
Regarding the new challenges of international cooperation, derived from the executive orders of the Donald Trump administration, he considered that it is necessary to strengthen responses from the South.
In this regard, he stressed that the capacity for regional agreement will be vital to demand what “rightfully belongs to us,” while urging a response with unity and the globalization of solidarity, in the face of the imperialist counteroffensive.
Within the framework of ALBA-TCP, he pointed out that strengthening an economic agenda based on complementarity, which takes advantage of all the potential of each country, is a priority.su
He highlighted the importance of the Alliance’s Strategic Agenda 2030 and referred to the importance of strengthening initiatives such as AgroALBA. Diaz-Canel specified that it is now time to work in the bilateral sphere to establish modalities that contribute to increasing food production and “guaranteeing our food and nutritional security.”
The Cuban president affirmed that it will be essential to establish maritime and air communication routes that improve the connection between the countries involved in regards to artificial intelligence.
Díaz-Canel reaffirmed Cuba’s commitment to integration and collaboration in the search for the well-being of the peoples.
