China celebrates 62nd anniversary of victory at Playa Giron

Cuban representatives celebrated today in China the 62nd anniversary of the victory at Playa Girón, accompanied by members of China’s People’s Liberation Army and diplomats from Latin America and the Caribbean.

During the activity, Waldo Pérez, military attaché of the island’s embassy in Beijing, indicated that the events of April 15 to 19, 1961 were relevant to the Cuban Revolution and the entire Latin American continent, since a military intervention plan supported by the United States was defeated.

Pérez recalled that the Cuban people neutralized the landing of a brigade of mercenaries in the area of Playa Larga and Playa Girón in less than 72 hours, victory that became the first US defeat in America.

“These events contributed to further forge national unity, which was evidenced in the declaration of the socialist character of the Revolution, on April 16, in a massive mass act led by the historical leader Fidel Castro”, Pérez indicated.

He denounced that the event is one of many aggressions against Cuba such as the implementation of the economic, commercial and financial blockade for more than 60 years, the support for counterrevolutionary gangs, destabilization and sabotage in the national territory, and the discredit in the mass media.

The activity included the projection of a video about the aforementioned combat and the delivery of recognitions to the children who won a contest for the anniversary.
