International University 2024 Congress begins in Cuba

More than 2,000 personalities and experts from 40 countries will address issues related to Higher Education in Cuba starting today, in the context of the 14th edition of the International University Congress 2024.

Organized by the Ministry of Higher Education (MES), the meeting will take place until February 9 at the Cuban capital’s Palacio de Convenciones, with the participation of representatives from 36 international university organizations and associations.

According to the organizers, 18 associations of Latin American and European university rectors will attend the event, including 79 rectors and vice-rectors from Brazil, 59 from the United States and 38 from France.

The conclave will provide an opportunity to establish alliances, agreements and cooperation links, Cuban Vice Minister of Higher Education, Reynaldo Velázquez, recently told the press.

At a press conference, the official explained that the Congress will continue the path of contributions from knowledge to take on the global challenges contained in the 2030 Agenda of the United Nations for Sustainable Development.

He stressed that, in the context of the multidimensional planetary crisis and international conflicts in various regions of the world, it is relevant to defend higher education as a public good, human right, and responsibility of states.

Parallel to the meeting, several events will be held, such as an international meeting on Agreements and the homologation of degrees among universities, which will allow Cuba’s access to new networks of world academic exchanges.
