Days against homophobia and transphobia begin in Cuba

The 7th International Trans-Identities Colloquium will begin today the program of the 16th edition of the Cuban Conference against Homophobia and Transphobia, developed by the National Center for Sexual Education -CENESEX.

The Colloquium, from May 4 to 6, will have as its inaugural conference the intervention of CENESEX director Mariela Castro on Public Policies for the effective exercise of the rights of trans people on the island.

The colloquium will bring together delegates from Italy, Mexico Argentina, France, the United States, Uruguay, Puerto Rico and Cuba. Virtual conferences, courses and panels are part of the program, dedicated to issues such as bodies, deprivation of liberty and resistance; and experiences from academia and activism.

The delegates will conclude with the participation in the Cuban Gala against homophobia and transphobia, which will be held on May 6 in the Avellaneda Hall of the National Theater.

This year the motto of the Cuban Days against Homophobia and Transphobia is For all families, love is Law, and they will take place from May 3 to 20 with activities in Havana and Sancti Spíritus, as well as in virtual settings.

The initiative has been carried out since two thousand eight with the purpose of contributing to the development of Comprehensive Education on Sexuality and the recognition and guarantee of the sexual rights of all people without distinction.

Academic dialogue, social and artistic activism, community and communication actions will characterize the proposal, aimed at making visible and combating all types of discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity in family spaces.

Sensitizing the entire Cuban population on respect for family plurality, educating on equality and non-discrimination, as well as promoting legal culture around family law endorsed by law are objectives of the Conference. The implementation of the Family Code will have special significance in the program, seven months after its approval in a popular referendum.
